Maker Green Team News May 2009 May started with the fallout of the canceled Celtic Beer Festival at Maker Heights, Cornwall. Following the news that the event had folded members of the Maker Green Team traveled to Maker Heights, Cornwall (at their expense) to support other festival volunteers left with situation of a canceled event. On Sunday 3rd May, Emma, Sky, Sue, Daryn, Pat, Simon, Iain, John, Andy, Jane & Mike began Scumbusting Maker Heights. There was no recycling provision infrastructure so we concentrated our efforts on fine picking the site. On the Sunday night a Euro bin caught fire and this was destroyed (caused we believe by a still burning disposable barbecue) The result was an area of contaminated land with melted plastic and broken glass. This area was made safe and scumbusted. The Maker Heights site was attended by us again on the Monday until we could do no more. May 2009, compared to previous years had no festivals with our direct organised involvement. A flat month! Towards the end of the month Mrs Delia Wallace stepped down as Corum Secretary. I'd like to thank Delia for the time that she served in the Corum. On her departure under Corum guidelines Miss Emma Wallace was nominated as 'temporary Secretary until our AGM in December. Emma Wallace is now a Corum member. Members of the Maker Green Team volunteered their time at the VW Festival held at Newham Park, Plymton, Plymouth over the Witsand bank holiday weekend. In the last week of May we herd news that the organisers of an event named 'Midsummer Festival' - the Indian Summer Group had decided it would not be able to fund our organisation of their waste & recycling provision at their event in June. This came as a blow to us, as many of our members had taken time off their work places to support this event and we had worked in goodfaith since February. Rozanne Paragon, an Indian Summer organiser has apologised and is herself disappointed that we're not involved - thats funding or the lack of it! Had we received funding in February from DEFRA the Midsummer Festival, a community event would have been one of ten events that we could have underpinned without their need to fund us! This is why we as a volunteer group need our own funding! If you as an individual, a business or a funder would like to support what we do? Nows the time to dig deep please! On a better note the Maker Green Team are to undertake a youth festival hosted at Saltram House, Plymouth, Devon on Saturday 11th July in conjunction with PMC (Plymouth Music Cooperative), The National Trust & Plymouth City Council. We intend to work with various youth groups across the city so that these young people can take 'ownership' of the 'demands of event recycling' and incorparate this into their event structure. Six core workers will guide these young people on the day. The Maker Green Team will mentor and support this group. That's it folks for now! |
